Technical Glossary: Decoding Manufacturing

CNC Machining
The use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems to automate the control of machining tools such as drills, lathes, and mills.
Dielectric Testing
A non-destructive testing method to measure a material’s insulation properties.
EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining)
A machining method primarily used for hard metals or those that would be impossible to machine with traditional techniques.
Electro-Mechanical Assembly
Combining electrical and mechanical components into a functional system.
Encapsulation
A process of covering or protecting components with a casing or with a substance that provides isolation or protection from the environment.
FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)

Surface Mount Technology (SMT)
A method for producing electronic circuits in which components are mounted directly onto the surface of PCBs.
Through-Hole Technology (THT)
A mounting scheme involving the insertion of component leads through holes drilled in PCBs and soldering to pads on the opposite side.
Wave Soldering
A process where solder is applied to electronic board assemblies in a waveform to attach metal components to the PCB.

Profile
The temperature profile indicates the times and temperatures that a board is exposed to during reflow. The ideal profile is identified in data sheets and is controlled by the zone temperatures and belt speed of the oven.
